For the first week we were tasked to choose one of 10 topics given to us, then using this as inspiration we needed to go into the city of Leeds and take pictures as well as gather quotes for a short story.
I chose the topic Old and New, my first thought when I saw this topic was the Leeds Train station as it has recently been revamped and expanded, a new gold roof has been fitted, and they have plans to continue the upgrade.
I only had my phone with me to take pictures so I knew they wouldn’t be as good quality as a professional camera would be, but since it was the first week I thought they would be okay for the meantime, I made sure to shoot in landscape mode and took a lot of photos. I had over one-hundred photos mostly around the outside of the building and of the gold roo,f and I tried to include people in my photos to capture the busyness of the train station.
I personally had only gone to interview people in the public a handful of times, and was previously usually in a team or with at least one other person, therefore I was nervous to talk to anyone. I started by talking to a couple of students who looked around my age as I thought this would be easier and would help my confidence, both girls were very nice and were able to give me some insightful opinions. Being in a train station obviously meant that a lot of people were rushing for trains so it was hard to get people who had the time to speak and didn’t just blank you and walk straight past. However I did manage to speak to a couple of men who were waiting around and said they were regularly travel and work in Leeds and I got a few interesting quotes from them.
I researched more into the train station and the new renovations to get some background into time, cost, resource and more to help write up my story.
I choose the photos which I thought best represented my story, resized, captioned and added alt text as we had been shown in our seminar and then finished up the story.
Overall I was happy with my work in week 1. I am ready to use a more professional camera and will be purchasing a Canon 1100D so I can improve on my photography, I also know that learning more about the technical aspects and editing will improve my photos in coming weeks. I know I need to improve on my writing as I struggled to come up with a headline and strapline that was attention grabbing, as well as figuring out the best way to structure my story which I can practice throughout the module.
